    Default Megasquirt...

So, I had an old Megasquirt 1 laying around the garage and decided to learn more about it. This thing has been tucked away for over 4 yrs! The version I'm using is a MS1 with a 2.2 board. This is the bottom dollar kit ecm which runs $160ish in the do it yourself version. It is capable of fuel and can be modified to control ignition. I will be starting off taking over fuel via 8 injectors and a stock Dodge Holley Throttle Body for metering air. Next step will be getting it tuned and learning the software. Third step is adding ignition. The MS1 can be modified to run distributor based ignition which is what I will be using. I will be modifying my stock distributor. Once I learn how to program both fuel and spark in harmony, I'll be lastly adding a little boost via twin screw thingy bobby.

First step was learning the wiring schematic. After learning that and downloading the software, I decided to try communication with my laptop. First mistake, I added power to pin 26 instead of pin 28. This cost me a cpu @ $38. Installed the new cpu backwards. Figured out that mistake after a little smoke had been released. Replaced the cpu correctly and the megasquirt connected and worked fine. I tested several sensors and even the tps. All worked fine.

I spent Friday evening and all day Saturday building and installing a custom wiring harness in my Dart. I got most of the harness done and decided to power it up and connect-wouldn't connect. Pulled the ecm and took it back to the bench. The ecm would not connect. Emailed megasquirt (excellent customer support btw) and they sent me a link with directions to testing communications to the ecm. All tests passed except the processor itself. At this point, I just ordered another new ecm. Bet your ass I'll get it put in correctly this time.

I'll be adding to this post with any news I get. I'll be running the car carbed while getting all the sensors and the wideband working.

Other than all my costly errors, this has been real fun. There is a custom wire set you can buy. I went the hard, cheap direction and made my own. I figure it will be a while before I can add fi. I still need to build a high pressure fuel system along with a fmu and intake swop. I wish it could all be fast but I'm slow with slow funding.

New processor arrived yesterday. I installed it (correctly) and the ecm seams to be working fine. At least it's all back in the car. I only have a MAT sensor for now but at least I can tell the temperature in the garage when the engine isn't running. This evening I plan to hook up the tach signal and add the ecm/wide band relay. I haven't had it started yet to verify injector output but will sometime this weekend.
On the good side of things, I dug through my cabinet and found a boost referencing aeromotive regulator and a walbro inline pump. Looks like I'll just need some plumbing and a gauge to complete my high pressure fuel system. I'm thinking of putting the regualtor directly in front of the fuel pump on the inside of the rear frame rail. I see no need to run all the fuel to the front of the car and then return it to the tank. Does anybody know why this wouldn't work? Do you think the fuel may get too hot?

Fuel is only going to get hot with a bigger pump than a 340lph returning to tank. Only reason to have the FPR close to engine is the response time of pressure changes with the engine under load. Mount it where your planning everything is going to be alright.

Awesome and thanks for the input. I plan on running a 255 so I'm well below your number. I may change my mind and mount it up front just to keep the wiring shorter. Either way I'll have to run a line as it will need a vacuum signal if mounted in the rear.

Tach signal is wired, new relay for ecm and wideband wired, fuel pump relay is now wired to megasquirt. Hit the key to take a look at the data and click. Looks like my starter took a shit. I'll have to see what is going on there. That was Saturday and I haven't got back to it. I'll update the good or the bad findings when I get the flywheel turning again.

Got the starter fixed this evening. Too cold to open the garage door so I'll test a little more of the ECM tomorrow. I'm hoping the fuel pump output and injector drivers are all ok.

    Good news and bad news...

Started it up, backed it up and the engine quit. The fuel pump output wasn't working. Ran 12v and started it back up. I let the car warm up and then tested the injector outputs. I'm fueling in batch so 2 banks of 4. Well, 4 outputs work fine with a normal pulse. The other 4 had steady ground-bad. All inputs are working and the ecm is signaling the injectors so that's good. I put the car back up and pulled the ecm. It's back to the bench.
Megasquirt has an excellent learning online support. I managed to test the ecm and find yet another part I burned. The injector driver resistor wasn't supplying the correct voltage and also overheated. I tested the resistor which tested good. So, the transistor is bad it supplies. Luckily, I ordered 2 of each with shipping for $7.65
I'll update how this goes when I get them installed. I wish I would have just done things right with no mistakes.

I got the parts last week and replaced the injector driver transistor and resistor this weekend. The ecm bench tested good but I haven't got to test it in the car yet. I did order a nice piece from Jegs which I'll post pictures of when it arrives!

Well, Jegs let me down. I'm pretty sure the 4bbl fi intake is going to be discontinued. That really bums me out as I'm hating to use a factory truck intake. Still haven't run tested the ecm, I'm slacking.

Finally run tested the ecm this weekend. All 8 injectors outputs are working correctly now. I'm looking at possibly running a throttle body with injectors since my manifold may not be available. If that happens, I'll have to rewire my harness.
