    Default My 1997 XJ

So folks that know me personally know my winter daily/beater is a Jeep Cherokee Country.

Only thing done to it is higher rise spring shackles on the rear... and that's because the others rusted in half, and also neoprene sway bar bushings and end links... similar issue.. and a rough country steering shock.

I hope to raise the front a little bit with possibly some V8 grand cherokee springs, and will probably have to replace the rear springs at some point because they are pretty well just flat now. no real bow to them at all.

all suggestions are welcome.. pics coming soon!

Stay clear of Rough Country or any "kit" for that matter. You can get such a better setup with a little effort and less money. Rough Country is cheap for a reason.

    $99 Rustys HD 3" coils
    http://www.rustysoffroad.com/rustys-...-hd-front.html

Mid 90s Dodge Dakota leaf pack. Leave your main leaf attached at the eyes. Remove the remaining leafs and integrate them into the Dakota pack. Add new ubolts and spring clamps. 3.5" of lift in the rear for well under $100 and 2 hours of time.

Grab some white body lift shocks. Brand doesnt matter, white bodies are just rebranded.

Dodge dakota front and rear soft lines to get the extra length needed.

    Remove the rear sway bar.

Stay under 4" and you more then likely wont have to mess with the drive shafts. If you have any vibes then grab some 1"x1" square tube and drill some holes in accordance with your center cross member bolts to drop the transfer case to get rid of them.

Wheels with 4.5" back spacing. Cheap Soft 8s are good.

    Run 31" tires.

Trim 1.5" in the front and rear to run 33" tires.

Done. A great setup for cheap. Ive run the same setup on some of the hardest trails on the East Coast.

Same setup with more fender cutting on 35" tires

I'm not even wanting to go 3.5" mine came a little lifted from the factory, ( it sits 2-3" higher than other jeeps it sits next to. so i don't want it to be tooo jacked up.

Country on the side is the model. Nothing different from any other Cherokee in terms of height or equipment.

    Up Country is a package.
Does it have OEM front and rear tow hooks?
    Front skid plate?
    Rear gas tank skid plate?
A very small transfer case skid plate that connects to the center cross member / transmission mount?
It does not have a rear sway bar.
    Rear limited slip differential.
    Transmission cooler.
    Full size spare.

If it has all of that it is an Up Country package. That means it also had heavier shocks, coils and leafs from the factory. That means a maximum of 1" lift from the factory.

If it doesnt have all of that you have a normal run of the mill Cherokee that has no lift from the factory.

If you replace the front coils with v8 ZJ coils you wont be gaining anything.

I cant tell if it has tow hooks or not but I would venture to say its a regular Jeep Cherokee Country with out an Up Country package.

I can give you some places to measure on it if you want to crawl under it that will tell you if their is any lift or not for certain.

    Not that I know of.

Tire sizes range from 215/70r15, 225/75r15 to 235,75r15.
There can be a big difference if one is one 215 tires with worn out springs vs one on 235s with springs in good condition.

Are there coil spacers on the front coils of yours?
