    Default 1966 Chevrolet Corvair Corv8

Once in a lifetime opportunity was found to get back to my mechanical roots and I accepted.
Back in mid July I bought a 1966 Chevrolet Corvair that has a Crown conversion installed. Quick back story: Originally starting out as a Corvair Monza coupe, 110hp flat 6, 4 spd. Then shortly after that someone decided correctly and did the best thing ever by purchasing a Crown engineering conversion kit and then doing a great job of going about installing it and transforming the Corvair into a Corv8. What Crown does is strip the car of it's drive line and give the means and hardware to mount a SBC or BBC ETC midship inside where the rear seat would have been and adapts to the Corvair transaxle with modified trans, converts the former trunk to a cooling system area for the engine and provides all of the necessary brake, clutch, suspension, interior and other parts that are unique to the conversion.
This one is setup pretty well but was converted/built in the '70's and I will update and upgrade the important things as needed while continuing to keep it on the road as much as possible. The Corvair is cloning a Corsa now and not a Monza anymore. It has an older but pretty nice urethane base/clear finish job that I'll touch-up in time it could use another detailing soon.
    Some specs:
Built vintage DZ302 SBC (full roller engine, 11:1 comp, P&P fuelie heads, Holley, Crown headers)
    40lb flywheel, Zoom clutch
    old Hays Magna-pulse ignition
Corvair transaxle (close ratio Saginaw 4 speed, 4 spider posi diff 3.55 gear set)
4 row radiator, dual electric cooling fans
Lowered with Crown HD suspension package
Western Superlite 15x8.5, rubber is BFG Radial TA 265/50 up front and 295/50 rear
    Telescoping steering column
Black interior, 2 seats integrated into fiberglass engine cover.

Yes the drivers side valve cover is upside down due too to the crankcase evac system being tuned to the same length on each bank.

That is the coolest conversion ever for a corvair. I've never seen it done before. Looks like it would be fairly smelly/noisy inside the cabin?

Thanks guys, they are both fast lol, but the Corvair has no saftey belts yet. The inside is very managable and you will only get some warm air if the windows are up. Trick is to open the cowl vent and it creates a positive pressure with the windows up and blows anything out thats not comfortable. Noise wise I love its not too loud but the induction roar behind your head is cool.

Thanks guys, It's light I need to verify on a scale but it should be right at 2650-2750lbs with a driver and fuel.

Thanks Guys, It's a blast to drive and the engine is completely covered and insulated against the interior so that really helps with the noise and heat from the engine. Its not loud like you would think at all(perhaps with a solid lifter cam) but since this engine is a full roller its pretty quiet. Now the exhaust and induction noise well I want to hear that it's welcome.

The politics of the time didn't help matter smuch I still think they are a beautiful car, and without a grill back in that time.. was just cool as hell.

I have a very soft spot gor Corvairs as I grew up around and riding in them. The late models were only built for 5 years '65-'69. They handled well with a flat 6 in the rear and the Don Yenko Stingers were and are still are very popular in SCCA. Only thing with the Crown conversion is you loose leg room but it's not a problem if your 6'tall and under. This Corv8 handles extremely well and power delivery is amazing for the light car, the high revving DZ 302 is perfect for this car. I'm swapping out header gaskets on it tonight and seeing about new mufflers too
