Default Some pics of the carnage.

This is the first thing I saw when I took off my lid.

I opened the throttle body next and found some nice sized aluminum chunks.

Next, I pulled the plugs. #s 3 and 7 both look to have blown..

I finally got around to lifting the front of the car and draining the oil. When I pulled the plug, I noticed a good bit of shavings caught by the magnet. When I drained the pan, straight coolant came out for a few minutes before mixing with the oil, then eventually straight oil.

Pull the engine and throw it in the recycle pile. I doubt anything there is usable.

If I can even use the intake and the cam, I'll be happy at this point.

Ouch. That's some major carnage if you have chunks up by the throttle body. What happened to cause it to implode? You said it had a lot of coolant in the oil, so I'm assuming a headgasket blew, which in turn pumped coolant into the cylinders, which in turn caused massive detonation and destruction?

Few things we NEEED! .. oil pan.. intake manifold. headers LOL. that's about all the must haves there. Cam would be nice if it's ok too.... lol if the block is ok maybe we could work something out.

Humm.. turbo 5.3... since you don't have AC any way LoL.

    - - - Updated - - -

With the chunks there, I'm quite worried about the intake manifold actually. when you go removing it.. be real careful of the oil pressure sending unit.. i have broken one of those before. i MAY have a spare off the 5.3 i think it's salvagable.

I'd say the intake is good but I'll pretty well bet the crank failed and caused the destruction. Should we start a poll?

I'm guessing the crank failed too, judging by the shavings on the drain plug. It was late last night, so I just left the container under the car and let the oil drain, so I didn't inspect it any further. I'm half tempted to lean toward a junkyard turbo build if we end up using the 5.3. I just love the sound of them spooling up. That may depend on the condition of the cam too. I'm not thinking the TII is the best for boosted cars. I think the intake is ok. but who knows with all those metal chunks sandblasting the inside of it. Maybe I got a free port job, lmao.

    - - - Updated - - -

Steve... Is the oil pressure sending unit the tiny pecker tube on the very back of the intake?

it's got the green top on it in this photo.

    - - - Updated - - -

The vacuum line goes around it over to the brake booster and with the gay ass auto dip stick location on these cars it's hard not to drag over it and break it.

As for crank failure... it's not a common thing in LS1's that I've heard of.. the stock crank is good and still running in a lot of thousand horsepower applications. I'd say more likely possiblities of a rod bolt .. anything is possible though. I think there is a good chance this beast is gonna be a heavy coffee table.

Big thanks to Tyler and Cait for stopping up and lending a couple extra hands tonight. Here is where I'm at now.

Intake looks like someone dumped toxic sludge in it with a handful of metallic gravel, but looking inside I dont see any actual damage to it. Yay!

Under the valve covers, the springs and rockers look good.

You can see some metal chunks in the chambers with the pushrods, but the sticks actually look ok.

Look Steve. Got the intake out and never broke anything. Just unhooked everything and slid it out under the fuel rails.

Getting closer to finding out how bad the inside of the block is. It was nice to find a couple reusable parts for now.

    Because LS.

On a serious note, I feel for ya Levi, that is a bad situation. I believe the car to be cursed. Just throwing that out there.... Good luck rebuilding.

Not cursed. Just old and rode hard (enjoyed). I didnt get it to be a show car. I got my money's worth and I expected it to happen eventually. Could have been at a more financially convenient time, but I'm not going to complain. It has shown me that there are still a lot of good people out there that look out for their own.
