West Virginia Introduces Bill to Exempt Older Vehicles From Property Tax

Legislation has been introduced in West Virginia (S.B. 49) to exempt motor vehicles, including automobiles, motorcycles, airplanes, trucks and tractors, that are older than twenty-five years from personal property taxes. Under the bill, these automobiles and motorcycles would need to display valid current antique licenses and could not be used for daily transportation.

We Urge You to Contact Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Members (List Attached) Immediately to Request Their Support for S.B. 49

It would be nice if our leadership could find something productive to do with their time instead of try to reinvent the wheel. There is welfare fraud, drugs, etc... seen everyday around all of us. Yet, they are worried about old cars... get real.

You should have to pay sales tax on it once when you buy it and then you're done... Old or new car.

Thanks for the information on this subject. I just emailed everyone on that list also. I do own a car over 25 years old and the amount of taxes I paid on it last year was awful. They now are trying to determine what the car actually values for, and they tried to tell me my 1984 camaro was worth 8k. I laughed at them and advised them that is was lucky to be worth $2,500. But I didn't win. So I hope this bill passes.

Pay $8 per year on my Dart. They charge a set rate here on taxes after a certain year/model.

I don't support it...tax on my car is $8/year and I can drive it whenever I want with regular license. I have several friends with vehicles over 25 yrs old that use them on a daily basis.

Yea, kenny. Mine was cheap a couple of years ago. Then they started telling me what my car was worth, the last year or so. Something new they came up with, and I am sure it will filter down through the state.

And not every car would have to have a plate, if you want to use your car as a daily driver that will be ok. This bill would be for guys who only drive their cars in the summer, to cars shows and what not. they wouldn't have to pay taxes on them with the new bill.

If the tax would increase, this would be a nice way to get out of it. My take on the whole thing is leave it alone and let me keep paying my 8 bucks...

One reason I'm glad I moved to Ohio, even if its just the other side of the river. No inspections and such is awesome.

The tax structure is too deep as it is. Probably every one of us is getting ripped on taxes anyway in one way or another. I still pay road tax on gas I use in my lawnmower. Add up all the gas run in lawnmowers across our state and you'd be surprised the amount of undue taxes being collected already.

I appreciate the responses here. I figured there would be support and wanted to at least spread the word.

I don't have any qualifying vehicles, but may have one day. This may be wishful thinking but I would hope there are those who would listen to their constituents. It is what we elected them for after all.

If you only pay $8 per year, that's great. But I figure there are many who genuinely pay hundreds per year in property tax for their garage queen(s).

Hope to see the bill pass. Some people are getting raped on taxes I am sure since some muscle cars have crazy high values.

I just hope Braxton keeps the same structure in place. So far, I've been golden with older cars. They rate them all the same even though I can insure them for the full amount with collector insurance.

Wouldn't a 10 yr old focus be worth about $1500? What is the tax rate there?

30 bucks isn't bad for a year. I'm not sure what the year number is here but after so many years it falls to a $8 standard tax. It's probably anything over 20 years or so. I guess they look at them as totally depreciated after that timeframe.

The reply I received today was likely the boiler-plate special everyone else is getting.

At least Mr. McCabe was very sympathetic to my concerns.

Too bad the state's finances are so bad they can't consider passing the bill. I'm sure if we still had our rainy day fund surplus like years past they would've seen fit to give us poor car guys a break on their personal property taxes.

Pfft... I bet it doesn't even get out of committee to a floor vote.

Kind of what I thought too. I'd be.amazed if it moves along any further than it sets right now. Would be nice though since I have one car that meets the age requirements now and the t/a is getting closer all the time.

Help me understand this madness... do you pay a tax on the purchace price when you buy the car and then a property tax on top of that?
