Default 98 Trans Am Fuel Pump Replacement?

Yesterday, after a nice hefty drive with the top down, I stopped at a red light and could hear the all mighty serpent hissing from the rear of my car. I first thought I ran over something and punctured a tire, but after pulling over and checking my tires (which should have been flat by now) the hissing was still coming strong. I then checked the muffler to see if I had a leak, but the Borla was doing its job. I then got as close to the fuel tank as I could and there it was. So, I think my fuel pump is about to go. I drove on home and let it set for about an hour and restarted the car. It is no longer hissing, but I know it is time to replace it.

What fuel pump do you recommend for replacement in a 98 Trans Am? I know I need to replace the fuel filter, but any brands better than another?

    Thank you,
    Chrislr

Go with a Walbro on the pump just incase you ever get to modding for more horsepower. The fuel filter could be from NAPA or wherever. Wait for the LS guys to chime in though, there could be better options.

NOt sure how the back of a Vert looks. I cut a hole in the top of my T/A to get it in and out that way. under the car it's a bitch of a job. pay a chevy dealer to do it if your not cutting a hole in your car for future access LoL.

never hurts to have a fresh filter.

walbro 255LPH pump for replacement for sure. it'll do all you need. hell it's fine on my turbo trans am. should take you to 600 HP atleast.. and when not running that much it doesn't have to work as hard so it will last even longer.

Walbro or Racetronix.... They both have plug and play replacements for the stock one and they are based on the same design.

walbro makes the racetronics pump. and most of the others.. Cameron on here is peddling walbro pumps at a good price... Racetronics also offers a "hot wire" kit that eliminates low voltage .... which isn't a big problem at normal power levels.

I made a bigger hole than the article though. the Verts i'm not sure about placement on stuff shouldn't be much diff, but with the top that comes down and all not sure if i could get to it.. i used a die grinder and cut off wheel. with a thick piece of sheeting over everything in the car lol.

+1 on cutting the hole for pump replacement. Pumps and different install kits are available from Thunder Racing also.

I know when I did mine on my 3rd gen it was PIA to drop the tank. I am pretty sure that we cut a hole after we dropped the tank.

x2 on dropping the tank. I could see cutting a hole in a race car but a nice vert? Just my opinion but if it was my car and such a nice car, I'd drop the tank.

Did it to my T/A ... I will make a nicer cover than a piece of kydex at some point. but do it. put sealing tape on it. and rivet or bolt it down. who will know? worse things were done in the production of the trans am... p.s. my hole is very neatly cut also.

I think everybody that said "don't cut it" needs to help you replace it....

y'all know the exhaust has to come out too right?

Cut it. Make yourself a nice air-tight trap door, and thank yourself every time you need to get in there from now on.

Tin snips work very well for cutting the hole and not making any sparks. Takes about 30 min to cut the hole and replace the pump. A flat pics of metal a little larger than the hole you cut and some rtv sealant and very short self tapping screws makes a nice clean install. For those that say the car is to nice to cut a hole in you will never even know it was cut.

It wouldn't really be that hard to make an access door out of some sheet metal and weather stripping.
